The Gold Coast is home to the largest concentration of theme parks in the Southern Hemisphere, and for families, thrill-seekers, and anyone who still gets excited about a really good roller coaster, that’s genuinely excellent news. Warner Bros. Movie World, Dreamworld, Sea World, Wet’n’Wild, and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary are all within a 30-minute drive of each other — which means you can visit multiple parks in a single trip without spending half your time in transit.
That said, doing theme parks on the Gold Coast without any planning is an expensive and tiring way to do it. Entry prices are significant, the parks are large and can feel overwhelming without a strategy, and the Queensland summer heat makes a long day in a theme park genuinely punishing without the right preparation. This guide gives you everything you need to plan a theme park visit that’s fun, efficient, and worth the money.
I’ve visited all the major Gold Coast parks over the years, some multiple times, and the advice here reflects what actually works for a visitor rather than the marketing copy on each park’s website.
📋 TL;DR — the quick version
- 🎢 Movie World is the best overall park: Best rides, best atmosphere, best value for adults and older kids.
- 🦁 Dreamworld is great for families with young children: Gentler rides, Tiger Island, and the Australian wildlife section make it ideal for under-12s.
- 🐬 Sea World is unique: Marine life encounters including shark dives and penguin experiences you genuinely can’t get elsewhere.
- 💦 Wet’n’Wild is perfect for summer: Water park with excellent slides and pools — great value on a hot day.
- 🦘 Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is different from the rest: Australian wildlife (not rides) — feeding kangaroos and holding koalas. Worth including for a different kind of day.
- 💳 Multi-park passes save significant money: Village Roadshow’s combo passes cover Movie World, Sea World, and Wet’n’Wild — much better value than buying separately.
- ⏰ Arrive early, leave by 3pm: The parks are most enjoyable in the first two hours after opening and become very crowded by midday.
🎬 Warner Bros. Movie World
Movie World is the Gold Coast’s flagship theme park and the one most adults rate as the best overall experience. The park is built around the Warner Bros. film and TV catalogue — DC superheroes, Harry Potter, Looney Tunes — and does a good job of using the IP to create atmosphere across the whole park rather than just slapping logos on generic rides.
The headline rides are excellent. The DC Rivals HyperCoaster is the tallest, fastest, and longest hypercoaster in the Southern Hemisphere and a genuinely world-class coaster experience — the backwards-facing rear seats are particularly good. Superman Escape launches you from 0 to 100km/h in two seconds. The Arkham Asylum coaster is a classic inverted coaster with a tight, intense layout. Justice League: Alien Invasion is a shoot-the-targets dark ride that’s excellent for families and can be ridden multiple times.
Movie World’s Hollywood Parade, which runs once daily in the afternoon, is one of the best theme park parades in Australia — elaborate floats, costumed characters, and a genuine spectacle that’s well worth timing your day around. The park generally does character meets and entertainment very well, which gives families with young children plenty to do beyond the big rides.
🎡 Dreamworld
Dreamworld is the Gold Coast’s largest theme park by area and has a different character from Movie World — broader, less cohesive in theme, but with a genuine depth of offering. The park has had a difficult few years following a tragic ride accident in 2016 and has invested heavily in rebuilding its reputation and ride quality since then. The current lineup is strong, particularly for families with younger children.
The steel coasters at Dreamworld are among the best in Australia — Steel Taipan, opened in 2021, is a genuine standout with a 70km/h launch, three inversions, and a layout that makes excellent use of the available space. The classic Thunder River Rapids water ride (now rebuilt following the 2016 accident) returns guests to one of Dreamworld’s most beloved experiences.
Pair this with How Long to Spend in Gold Coast to round out your trip.
Tiger Island and the Australian wildlife precinct set Dreamworld apart from the other parks. The Bengal tiger experience allows small group encounters with the tigers in a way that’s genuinely impressive — these are magnificent animals and seeing them up close in a relatively natural environment is different from a zoo experience. The koala encounters are popular and book quickly; reserve yours when you arrive at the park gates.

🐬 Sea World
Sea World occupies its own headland in Main Beach and combines a legitimate marine life focus with a good range of rides. The park has invested significantly in its animal welfare standards and the marine exhibits — particularly the penguin colony, shark exhibit, and sea turtle rehabilitation program — are genuinely educational and well-presented.
The rides at Sea World include Jet Rescue (a fast launch coaster themed around a rescue mission) and a pair of good family coasters. The park has also expanded its superhero area in a collaboration with DC. But the unique selling point remains the marine experiences — the shark dive experience, the dolphin presentations, and the penguin parade are things you genuinely can’t do at the other Gold Coast parks.
Sea World is generally a better fit for families with children aged 5–12 who are interested in marine animals than for thrill-seeking teenagers or coaster enthusiasts. For the latter group, Movie World or Dreamworld deliver more in terms of ride intensity. Sea World’s best strategy is to combine it with Wet’n’Wild on a hot day — both are owned by the same company and a combo pass makes them very good value together.
💦 Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast
Wet’n’Wild is exactly what it sounds like: a large water park with a comprehensive range of slides, rivers, wave pools, and children’s play areas. In Queensland summer (December to March), when temperatures regularly exceed 35°C, a day at Wet’n’Wild is one of the most sensible things you can do on the Gold Coast. Even in autumn and spring, the Queensland sun makes a water park day very enjoyable.
The park’s headline attractions include the Kamikaze (a nearly vertical drop slide), the BlackHole (a long, dark enclosed tube slide), and the AquaLoop (a near-vertical loop enclosed in a transparent tube). The Lazy River is excellent for families, and the children’s area is genuinely well-designed for young kids. Lockers are available for hire and you’ll want one — keeping a dry change of clothes and towel outside the lockers is strongly recommended.

💡 Planning tips for Gold Coast theme parks
The single most important piece of advice: arrive at opening time. Theme parks across the board are dramatically more enjoyable in the first two hours after opening, when queues are short and the temperature is manageable. In peak season, popular rides can have 60–90 minute queues by midday; at opening time, the same rides often have queues of 10–15 minutes. Plan to tackle the high-intensity rides first and save calmer experiences (shows, character meets, slower rides) for the afternoon when the heat is at its peak.
Multi-park passes from Village Roadshow (the operator of Movie World, Sea World, and Wet’n’Wild) offer very significant savings over buying individual tickets. A three-park pass or the annual pass (which has an absurdly short payback period if you’re staying on the Gold Coast for a week) should be the default purchase for most visitors. Dreamworld and Currumbin operate separately and have their own passes.
Food inside the parks is expensive and generally mediocre. Most parks allow you to bring in a sealed water bottle and some snacks — check the current policy on each park’s website before you go, as policies vary. Staying well hydrated in the Queensland heat is genuinely important, especially for children.
