Qatar Airways to Australia Review: Economy, Business and Everything In Between

Qatar Airways has become one of the most talked-about airlines on earth in the past decade. From a standing start as a small Gulf carrier, it’s grown into a global powerhouse — regularly winning Skytrax “World’s Best Airline” — and its routes to Australia via Doha now compete with Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qantas for the most demanding long-haul travellers.

I’ve flown Qatar Airways on the Doha–Sydney and Doha–Melbourne routes in both economy and business class. This review is honest, detailed and based on actual experience rather than press releases.

📋 TL;DR — the quick version

  • Qsuites business class is among the world’s best and a genuinely transformative long-haul experience.
  • 💺 Economy class is very good — strong seat, excellent entertainment, above-average food.
  • 🏆 Hamad International Airport in Doha is regularly voted the world’s best — the transit experience is exceptional.
  • 💰 Economy fares are competitive from most global departure points.
  • 🎬 Oryx One entertainment is excellent — thousands of hours of quality content.
  • 🛌 Business class sleep quality on Qsuites is extraordinary — the door creates genuine privacy.
  • 🌐 Wi-Fi is available but inconsistent in quality across different aircraft.

✈️ The routes: which Australian cities does Qatar fly to?

Qatar Airways operates flights from Doha (DOH) to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Service frequency varies — Sydney and Melbourne receive multiple flights daily; Perth and Adelaide have less frequent service. The airline uses primarily Airbus A350s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners and A380s on the Australia routes. The A350 is particularly well regarded — it has excellent air quality, lower cabin pressure (gentler on the body during very long flights), and an interior that feels genuinely modern.

The Doha–Sydney route is one of the world’s longest at roughly 14 hours. Combined with most European or North American connections into Doha, the total journey time ranges from 22 to 28 hours depending on departure point.

💺 Economy class: how does it compare?

Qatar Airways economy class is one of the stronger economy products in the sky. On A350 aircraft, economy seats have a pitch of 32 inches and a width of 17.8 inches — slightly above average. The seat-back screen is 11.6 inches, which is large enough to be genuinely enjoyable. Recline is standard (about 4 inches), and the headrests are adjustable. USB and universal power outlets are at every seat, which is essential for a very long flight.

The Oryx One entertainment system is excellent — over 5,000 channels of movies, TV shows, music, podcasts and games. The interface is intuitive, the screen is bright and responsive, and the content library includes a strong mix of Hollywood, Arabic and Bollywood options. The food is above average: Qatar’s catering kitchen in Doha is famously good for an airline, and meal quality consistently impresses travellers. Special meals (vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free) are available if ordered in advance.

🌟 Business class: the legendary Qsuites

If there’s one product that changed the conversation about airline business class in the past decade, it’s Qatar Airways Qsuites. Launched in 2017, the design introduced features that no competitor had previously offered and that most still haven’t matched.

The seat design: Qsuites feature a sliding privacy door — a first for business class. The door creates a genuinely private environment that transforms the cabin experience. You close your door during takeoff and landing, during meals, and while sleeping, and the result is something closer to a private room than a seat in a shared cabin. This is the single feature that most business class travellers immediately notice and love.

The double-bed option: For couples or friends travelling together, Qsuites allows two adjacent seats to be configured as a double bed. The centre armrest lowers and a filler panel creates a genuinely comfortable shared sleeping surface. This is unique in commercial aviation at this cabin level and makes a 14-hour overnight flight an entirely different proposition for couples.

The seat dimensions: The Qsuite flat bed is 79 inches long — sufficient for anyone up to around 6’5″ to sleep without bending. The width is approximately 23 inches, which is genuinely spacious. The mattress pad and bedding are among the better in-flight bedding options available in any airline’s business cabin.

Food: Qatar business class food is outstanding. The “Dine on Demand” service allows you to order any item from the menu at any time during the flight. The wine list is excellent, with options ranging from Champagne to premium regional wines. Food presentation uses proper crockery and real glassware throughout the service.

🛫 Doha’s Hamad International Airport: the world’s best transit hub

Hamad International Airport (DOH) is consistently voted the world’s best airport, and it earns the title. The main terminal is enormous, architecturally distinctive, and genuinely pleasant to spend time in even on a 3-hour transit. The shopping and dining options are exceptional — over 300 retail and food outlets, ranging from local Qatari cuisine to international restaurant brands.

For business class passengers, the Al Mourjan Business Lounge is one of aviation’s finest — à la carte dining, a pool, shower suites, quiet rest areas and a bar that serves through the night. For economy class passengers, there are multiple dining options in the terminal without lounge access that are well worth exploring.

If you have a longer stopover, Qatar Airways operates a free stopover programme that includes hotel accommodation for transiting passengers. Even 24 hours in Doha is enough to visit the National Museum of Qatar, Souq Waqif (one of the Middle East’s finest traditional markets), and The Pearl — a spectacular artificial island development that showcases Qatar’s remarkable transformation.

💰 How to book Qatar Airways to Australia: cash vs points

Economy return fares from Europe to Australia via Doha with Qatar typically range from €750 to €1,600, depending on the season and how far ahead you book. Business class return fares range from €2,500 to €7,000, with the lower end accessible during sales.

Qatar’s Avios programme offers competitive redemptions. Business class from London to Sydney can be redeemed for around 100,000-120,000 Avios. Avios can be earned through the programme directly or transferred from several credit card points programmes. Watch for Qatar sale events in October-November for summer travel and in January-February — business class sale fares can be exceptional during these promotional windows.

🤔 Qatar vs competitors: how does it stack up?

Qatar Qsuites vs Singapore Airlines Business: These are the two best products for Australia. Singapore Airlines has the slight edge on food and service warmth; Qatar has the edge on privacy (the door) and the couples’ double-bed option. Both are exceptional — you genuinely can’t go wrong with either.

Qatar Economy vs Emirates Economy: Comparable quality overall. Qatar’s A350 cabin is arguably more pleasant and the cabin pressure is gentler on a long flight. Emirates’ ICE entertainment system has more content. Fares are usually similar — compare both for your specific dates.

Qatar vs Qantas: Qantas has the edge on service warmth and Australian character; Qatar has the edge on seat quality in both economy and business. For the journey itself, Qatar is the better technical product. For the experience of flying to Australia, Qantas has an intangible edge that’s hard to quantify but very real once you’re on board.

🏆 Final verdict

Qatar Airways is one of the two or three best ways to fly to Australia. The Qsuites business class is genuinely extraordinary — the privacy door and double-bed option have no equivalent in commercial aviation at this level. The economy product is strong and the Doha hub is a genuine pleasure to transit through. Whether you’re flying from Europe, North America or the Middle East, Qatar Airways deserves serious consideration for any journey to Australia.
